How Your IELTS Band Score Is Calculated (With Examples)

Many candidates are surprised by their overall band because they don't know how the rounding works. Once you understand it, you can plan exactly which skill to improve.

The four scores

You receive a band from 0 to 9 for each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Half bands such as 6.5 or 7.5 are possible.

How the overall band is worked out

Add the four scores, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band:

• An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band (6.25 → 6.5)
• An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 → 7)
• Anything below .25 rounds down; between .25 and .75 becomes .5

Raw scores in Listening and Reading

Listening and Reading both have 40 questions. Approximate conversions:

What this means for your preparation

If your target is an overall 7 and your Writing is stuck at 6, a half-band gain in Listening or Reading can be enough to lift your overall score.

Listening and Reading usually improve fastest because they are about technique. Writing and Speaking take longer — but they are often the scores that universities and immigration programmes set a minimum for, so check your requirements carefully.
